Pittsburgh-based supermarket chain Giant Eagle Inc. hired DLA+ to provide architectural and interior design services for the new Market District grocery store in The Bridges development in Carmel, Indiana.

Project Challenges and Outcomes
Challenges
Design a grocery store that would be the company’s flagship and first Giant Eagle Market District store in Indiana. The store, which would need to adhere to strict aesthetic and zoning guidelines, was to be a large anchor in a new development, The Bridges, in the affluent neighborhood of Carmel. As the first store in the state it would need to bring a different consumer shopping experience to stand out in a crowded retail segment in the community.
Outcomes
The design brought a prairie style of architecture to the Market District façade in accordance with the landscape and aesthetic of the community. The store features typical grocery sections and features found in this upscale market experience and including produce, artisan domestic and imported cheese, meat and seafood, bank, pharmacy, bakery and a sweet shop with handmade confections. A gourmet prepared foods area with stone-hearth baked pizzas, hand-rolled sushi and other freshly made dishes as well as a Starbucks will also be located in this store. This area will include indoor café style seating for patrons.
The store will be differentiated from the usual shopping experience with non-typical specialty sections such a wine, beer, and spirits store, full-service restaurant, Table by Market District, with indoor and outdoor seating, a banquet facility, cooking school, and beauty salon.
